History
Established in 1970, the firm was founded to serve Buffalo’s business and entrepreneurial community with unparalleled legal services. Over the past five decades, the firm has grown into a premier provider of civil legal services, catering to both businesses and individuals. The high standards upon which the firm was built continue to guide its practice and expansion.
1970: Firm Founding
In October 1970, the firm opened its doors as Duke & Yaeger, founded by Emanuel “Manny” Duke and Edwin Yaeger, both esteemed members of the former firm Saperston, Wiltse, Duke, Day & Wilson. Manny, a renowned trial attorney and head of litigation, and Ed, a distinguished corporate and real estate lawyer, established a results-driven practice that quickly became a leader in commercial and construction litigation. Their stellar reputations and commitment to excellence laid the foundation for the firm’s enduring success.
1975: Donald Holzman and Barry Radlin Join the Firm

In 1975, Donald Holzman and Barry Radlin joined the firm, bringing expertise in tax law, corporate transactions, and construction law. Don, formerly a leading attorney at Jaeckle, Fleischmann & Mugel, strengthened the firm’s corporate practice, while Barry, a former Chief Counsel for the New York State Department of Transportation, enhanced its construction litigation capabilities. With their addition, the firm became Duke, Holzman, Yaeger & Radlin.
1993: A New Era of Leadership
Gregory Photiadis joined the firm in 1977 and, after years of working closely with Manny Duke, became a named partner in 1993 alongside Donald Holzman. This transition marked the firm’s evolution into Duke, Holzman, Yaeger & Photiadis. With Manny retiring to Of Counsel and Barry departing to establish his own practice, the firm continued to grow under Greg’s leadership. He strategically expanded the firm’s capabilities, mentoring a new generation of attorneys and reinforcing its position as a premier business law firm in Western New York.
2008: A Strategic Merger
James Gresens and Patricia Gillen, both former Duke Holzman attorneys who had founded Gresens & Gillen, LLP, rejoined the firm in 2008. Their renown in construction law and labor and employment matters complemented the firm’s existing practice areas, further solidifying its reputation for excellence. With Jim Gresens as a Senior Partner, the firm adopted the name Duke Holzman Photiadis & Gresens LLP, which it would maintain until 2025.
2014: Relocation and Leadership Expansion
2015: Retirement of Donald J. Holzman
After a distinguished career spanning six decades, Donald Holzman retired in June 2015. His contributions to corporate, tax, and estate law were instrumental in shaping the firm’s success. A prolific writer and lecturer, Don’s expertise influenced generations of attorneys and business professionals. He passed away in 2017, leaving behind a lasting legacy.
2020: The Firm’s 50th Anniversary and Pandemic Response
While the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted traditional celebrations, the firm commemorated its 50th anniversary in 2021. Despite unprecedented challenges, the firm seamlessly adapted through remote work solutions, virtual meetings, and innovative client service methods. That year, longtime litigation partner Howard E. Berger retired, and former partner Matthew J. Beck rejoined the firm as Of Counsel, extending its reach to Albany and beyond.
2025: Firm Name Changes to Duke Holzman Photiadis & Ritter LLP
In 2025, Charles C. Ritter, Jr. was added to the firm name, marking a significant milestone in the firm’s evolution. The firm adopted its current name, Duke Holzman Photiadis & Ritter LLP.
Greg Photiadis said, “Chuck has been a cornerstone of our firm since he joined us in 1995. He brings a rare combination of legal acumen, client-focused service, and leadership to the table. His promotion is a natural and well-deserved progression. He has long embodied the values of excellence, tenacity, and collaboration that we hold dear at DHPR.”
Reflecting on his journey, Chuck shared, “I have always loved being a lawyer here, and I especially enjoy working alongside such talented colleagues.”
Chuck demonstrated exceptional leadership throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, skillfully guiding the firm as senior managing partner during a period of great uncertainty. “Through the pandemic, we grew together and formed an even stronger foundation,” he noted. His vision, alongside Photiadis, led to a strategic expansion, transitioning the firm from a boutique-sized operation to a dynamic, full-service firm with over 20 attorneys.
Calendar year 2025 started with further growth, Thomas D. Lyons was promoted to partner, and George S. Van Nest returned to the firm as a partner in the firm’s Environmental Law practice group.
The firm’s growth has been fueled largely by a strong reputation, client referrals, and a robust network of outside attorneys who continually entrust Duke Holzman with complex legal matters.
The firm continues to expand its capabilities while maintaining its unwavering commitment to excellence, integrity, and client advocacy. As Duke Holzman looks ahead, it remains steadfast in its mission to provide superior legal services for generations to come.
